My Artistic Expression
I left Venezuela 28 years ago and no matter where I’ve traveled or lived, Latin America remains in my blood – it’s where my roots are. I wanted to create a Tarot deck that not only honors Venezuela, but also the other places across Latin America where I’ve spent time, such as Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Peru. Through this deck, I aim to pay homage to my heritage, to reconnect with it, and to feel present with it, even from afar.
As for the creative process, when I decide what card to paint at any given moment, it just comes to my mind, like a photo! I keep a scrapbook where I organize images and ideas, but most of the time, the images simply appear in my head, and I feel a real need to paint them. I start by sketching the composition on the computer, with all the elements in place, and then I proceed to paint.
From Vision to Canvas: Creating My Tarot Deck
I incorporate traditional symbology from the Rider-Waite Smith Tarot deck but adapt them to reflect the regions or subjects I’m depicting. For example, the King of Swords Mariachi card features a trumpet to represent the element of air. In other cases, a coconut symbolizes the suit of Cups, or a Peruvian Llama stands in for a horse in one of the Knights. It all depends on how inspiration strikes me in the moment.
The project is still in progress, with each card being crafted with careful attention to detail and symbolism. This mockup is just a glimpse of what the final deck will look like, and I look forward to sharing the completed deck with you. I hope it brings as much inspiration and connection to others as it has to me during its creation.
